A woman was left horrified after going through her grandmother's pantry and making some pretty grim discoveries.
Pantries can build up some pretty interesting collections of food over the years. And of course, the longer the pantry has been active the more things get built up in there.
Who knows what might be lurking at the back of the shelf, whether it's an ancient can of prunes, or a jar of sardines which have seen better days.

Well, one woman decided to take the plunge and explore her grans' freezer.
In a video posted to TikTok, the woman - who goes by @monogamy96 - filmed herself discovering all manner of very old items.
There were some interesting finds in there, including a cherry cheesecake which went out of date in 2000 and came with 'real cherry topping'. Delicious.

There was also something called 'Creamy Supreme' from 2014. Probably not so creamy, nor so supreme, in 2023.
But there was one item which took things to the next level entirely.
It's one thing having tins which are very out of date, because you can't actually see the contents.
That is not the case with a jar.

The woman brought out a jar which had a handwritten label reading simply: 'Pears Sept 1999'. Oh no.
Well, I suppose you can't see that and not try them. So, the brave soul made the decision to take the lid off the jar of pears which were some 24 years old.
Needless to say, the result was not pretty, with her gagging straight away.

She said: "This is insane, these are pears from 1999 that was canned. This smells like death."
And what about the contents of the jay? Well that didn't look good either. It's fair to say that while they might have been pears in 1999, any resemblance to those delicious and juicy fruits was now long gone.
In place of that was a dark substance, and while the outlines of the fruits were still vaguely visible, it was clear that they had broken down into a black, tar-like substance in the jar.
No thank you.

While 24 years might be a long time for a soft fruit like a pear, some foodstuffs can last a great deal longer than that. And I mean a LOT longer.
The oldest known foodstuff found which was still edible was honey which was found in ancient Egyptian tombs. It had crystallised over time, but due to honey's antimicrobial properties was still edible, at least theoretically.
Likewise, crate of champagne have survived for more than 100 years on the bottom of the ocean. It turns out that the conditions at the bottom of the sea, with less sunlight and crucially no oxygen in the air meant that the wine was very well preserved, as long as the bottle didn't leak of course.
