Coffees are often a go-to for people who work long hours or those who wake up early but a doctor has warned against drinking it first thing in the morning.
Speaking on behalf of Jude, GP Dr Masarat Jilani shared some advice that might make you think twice about your daily caffeine habit.
The medic noted: "As we get older, our gut can become more sensitive."

Coffee drinking in the morning may not immediately lead to health complications but over a period of time it could, especially on an empty stomach.

Explaining why coffee and an empty stomach in the morning is not a good combo, Dr Jilani said it could 'irritate the gut and ramp up acid production' which could potentially lead to acid reflux.
According to WebMD acid reflux is 'when acid from inside your stomach flows up into your esophagus and throat'.

The site adds: "Normally, the LES closes as soon as food passes through it. But if it doesn't close all the way or it opens too often, acid from your stomach can move up into your esophagus. This can cause symptoms such as a burning chest discomfort called heartburn."
Not exactly the response you want to get from a cup of coffee, right?
If you feel like starting your day with a cup of Joe, to help reduce your chances of experiencing acid reflux, Dr Jilani suggests 'waiting about an hour' after you wake up before you consume your first of the day.
In an ideal world, you should eat something before you drink coffee, too.

In addition, the waiting time before you consume coffee should ideally be an hour and a half. Explaining more on this, Dr Jilani said: "This gives your natural cortisol levels time to rise on their own and gives you a chance to eat something, which can help protect your stomach lining."
She added: "Plus, spacing out your caffeine intake can lead to more stable energy levels throughout the day, rather than the sharp highs and crashes that come with an early caffeine hit."
If you have existing bladder issues, consuming coffee can increase how often you use the toilet. Dr Jilani explained: "If you experience bladder sensitivity, you might want to try decaf or half-caffeinated options to see if they make a difference."

How well your body deals with coffee may drastically differ depending on your sensitivity to caffeine - and this is important to take note of.
Speaking further on the timings to avoid consuming coffee, Dr Jilani advised that you should also avoid consuming caffeine post-noon.
"These simple changes can help reduce gut irritation, support bladder health, and promote more balanced energy levels throughout the day," the doctor added.
