Wrestling tag-team champion Jay Briscoe dies in car crash aged 38

The wrestler reportedly passed away in Laurel, Delaware on Tuesday, January 17

Ring of Honor legend Jay Briscoe has died a in car crash at the age of 38.

The wrestling champion, whose real name is Jamin Pugh, was part of a famed tag team with his brother Mark.

The accident reportedly took place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Laurel, Delaware, according to the Wrestling Observer.

The publication reported that Pugh and his two children were 'on their way back from a cheerleading competition at the time'.

His two kids were reportedly hospitalised after the accident, while another person is said to be in critical condition.

AEW owner Tony Khan wrote on Twitter: "Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today.

"Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We'll do whatever we can to support his family.

"Rest In Peace Jamin."

Paying tribute to the late star, WWE icon Paul 'Triple H' Levesque tweeted: "An incredible performer who created a deep connection with wrestling fans across the globe.

"My condolences to the family and friends of Jay Briscoe."

Former WWE star and NXT head Shawn Michaels said: "On behalf of the @WWENXT community, I would like to express our condolences to the Briscoe family for their loss."

Wrestling vet Frankie Kazarian added: 'I cannot even begin to process this right now, I loved everything about my friend Jay Briscoe.

"His passion. His drive. His presence.

"Our wars in the ring. Most importantly, how much he loved his family. I am literally sick to my stomach."

Christopher Daniels referred to the late wrestler as 'one of the toughest men I ever had the privilege of sharing a ring with'.

"I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to know him and wrestle him as often as I did. Rest in Peace, Jay, I love you," he wrote.

Pugh was best known for his time with Ring of Honor, and at the time of his death, he was one-half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions with his brother Mark in their 13th reign.

He also was a two-time ROH World Champion and ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions.

After making his debut in 2001 for Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), Pugh joined ROH a year later in 2002.

It's safe to say that the rest was history.
