A man has passed away after being bitten by a venomous spider in Brazil.

On July 9, a man named Vinicius and six friends stopped by beachside restaurant Sambass Cafe in Cairu in the Brazilian state of Bahia after going on a boat trip.

The next day Vinicius started feeling severely unwell and quickly deteriorated, passing away five days later.

One of his friends recalls Vinicius sitting down on a wicker sofa at the restaurant.

He claims he remembers seeing a spider's cocoon on the wicker and reportedly warned Vinicius from sitting there, but he sat down anyway.

The friend said: "It was on this little wicker sofa, man. I even told the guy to take it off. That's their cocoon. He sat on the little sofa and I sat on a separate chair."

The next day, Vinicius' health began declining.

Vinicius reported symptoms of breathlessness and chest pains and was rushed to hospital.

It was ascertained he'd been bitten by a spider - with the flesh around the bite having already begun to turn black.

As the spider's venom made its way through Vinicius' body, necrosis began to occur - necrosis is 'the medical term for the death of your body tissue,' Cleveland Clinic explains.

It adds: "When the cells in your tissues die, it can affect many different areas of your body, including your bones, skin and organs. Necrosis can occur because of illness, infection, injury, disease or lack of blood flow to your tissues."

On July 14, Vinicius sadly passed away.

Owner of Sambass Cafe, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "This has never happened in 20 years, we have not had any news of this, no client came to us, no one looked for us, no one asked for help."

CCTV footage from the cafe is reportedly being reviewed to see how and when Vinicius may've been bitten while there.

It remains unclear what type of spider he was bitten by, however, Brazil is home to the Brazilian wandering spider which is considered one of the most deadly spiders in the world.

National Centre for Reptile Welfare details: "Wandering spiders are a family of spiders (Ctenidae) that includes the Brazilian wandering spiders, the most well-known and infamous of the family.

"The genus Phoneutria contains 9 species of which the Brazilian Wander Spider Phoneutria fera is the most famous. The genus name is from the Greek φονεύτρια, meaning 'murderess'."
