According to a fact check by Snopes, who regularly debunk and research online myths and legends, have released a report concluding whether this did indeed happen.

The claim alleges that in 1969 engineers made a shocking discovery as they attempted to divert water.

The website was able to confirm that the Army Corps of Engineers did indeed attempt to drain the water from the American falls side to the Canadian side for several months to assess erosion.

They also confirmed that engineers found two unidentified dead bodies through doing this.

This find made headlines at the time as a Vancouver Sun news articles explains the incident.

“The bodies of an unidentified man and woman have been found here in a grisly beginning to a major engineering feat that has all but halted flow of the Niagara River over the American Falls,” the report from June 13, 1969, read.

“Police said today the decomposed body of the woman was discovered Wednesday while they searched for the man, who was seen leaping over the precipice. His body was found Thursday.

“The water was shunted to the channel flowing over the Horseshoe Falls so engineers can study the face of the American Falls in an attempt to halt erosion."

It is not clear whether the two individuals were ever identified or when exactly, how or when the bodies ended up in the water.

As well as this, the engineer group also found something else they weren’t expecting. millions of coins.

The coins were explained as being either dropped or thrown in from tourists who had visited the area due to the spot being a hot spot for tourists from both America and Canada.

One can only imagine what is at the bottom of the falls now after so long since water was last diverted.
