Oil Rig Worker Shows How Terrifyingly Dark It Is At Sea

An oil rig worker has shown what true darkness looks like at night at sea, and it's absolutely terrifying.

To anyone who enjoys blackout blinds when they're trying to get to sleep, or perhaps just prefers sitting in a dark room while watching TV, you think darkness is your ally – but you merely adopted the dark; the sea was born in it.

For oil rig workers, the dawn drowns out the void with actual light. At night, without moonlight shining down on the water, it's nothing but... well, nothing.

On TikTok, @oilywhitehat posted an unnerving video from the railings of an oil rig. 'Everyone posting how dark it is at night on a boat... I work on an oil rig, let's see how dark it really is,' the video's text reads.

While there's lights over the rig itself so the workers can see where they're going, there's no lights shining on the water, nor does there appear to be any moonlight. 'Pitch black, can't see past the handrails,' the video adds, with the caption reading, 'Don't fall in the water at night.'

In another clip, he even brings a flashlight to see if he can shine any sort of light on the surrounding sea, to no avail. The videos have racked up more than 10 million views combined, with some commenting to say it's 'unlocked a new fear' in them.

'Alright we all should apologise to the guy who didn’t see the iceberg that hit the titanic,' one user wrote. 'Imagine falling off the side and not knowing what ur gonna land in,' another wrote. 'I never understood the need for lighthouses until today,' a third commented.

'When I was in the navy it would literally get so dark sometimes I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face when I had to stand outside while on watch,' another wrote. 'There could be someone staring at you in a boat and you couldn’t see them but they could see you,' a fifth commented. 'This should be a movie where something is out there but no one can see called surviving the darkness,' a sixth suggested, even though that movie would just be a black screen, in theory.

'A worker could literally fall over and no one would ever know,' another wrote. 'My toxic trait is thinking I could see way farther,' one joked. 'Imagine all those people who have been lost at sea for days, just floating in pitch black not sure what’s around you,' another commented.
