Doctor issues warning against popular sex act that could increase your risk of 'nasty' infections

Apparently 97 percent of Brits have admitted to doing the NSFW deed

If you like to get frisky in places other than your bed, then you might want to listen up.

While the bedroom is the most common place for people to have sex, some couples take their risqué antics elsewhere in the house.

From bathrooms to the kitchen, to braving it in the garden in the hopes the neighbors won't see - people are having sex everywhere.

But one place that's seemingly growing in population is the trusted couch, with 97 percent of Brits having admitted to getting down and dirty on their sofas.

In a study conducted by UK business Sofa Club, it was revealed that one in five of those who have sex on the couch keep the TV on in the background.

Some of the 500 study participants said that doing the deed in the living room made them feel more comfortable that in other locations (26 percent of men and 24 percent of women, to be precise).

To the people who enjoy a bit of sofa sex, there's one thing that you should be aware of - and that's bacterial infections.

Doctor Hana Patel, NHS GP and GP at Medico-Legal Expert Witness, warned: "Though having sex on the sofa can be fun, there are some risks to be aware of. One example is an increased risk of bacterial infections due to sofas often not being cleaned as thoroughly and easily as your bedding.”

Patel went on to speak of the important of keeping sex toys clean too.

"If you're sharing sex toys, make sure you wash them between each use and always put a new condom on them each time," she said.

"Sharing sex toys has risks, including getting and passing on STIs such as chlamydia, syphilis and herpes."

As to why sofa sex is seemingly so popular, sex and relationship coach, Gemma Nice, says it's because of the spontaneity that often comes with it.

“Having sex on the sofa often adds a touch of spontaneity that keeps the excitement alive,” Nice said.

"It creates a more intimate setting where couples can engage in dirty talk or foreplay before moving things to the bedroom. Plus, the presence of a TV in the living room can set the mood, with a film or show potentially instigating forms of arousal that might lead to sexier moments."

She further noted that bedroom sex at night 'often involves a routine', which can arguably be a bit of a buzz kill in comparison to sofa sex which gives people the chance to 'dive right into the moment'.
