Halloween is just around the corner, and if this year’s pop culture offering is anything to go by, there’ll be no shortage of Michael Myers, Vecnas and She-Hulks hitting the streets on the spookiest night of the year.
But anyone who doesn’t have a prosthetics artist on their close friends list might be thinking of budget ways to induce chills come 31 October - and what’s more budget than a Jeffrey Dahmer costume? Some glasses and a blond wig’ll do the trick.
But one person who certainly won’t be giving you candy if you turn up at her door dressed as the serial killer is Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, who recently took to Twitter to slam the idea of dressing up as Dahmer in the name of fun.

She tweeted on Wednesday (19 October): “im just gon go head and say it, put the jeffrey dahmer costumes back in the closet. we ain’t having it!!!!!!”
Dahmer killed a total of 17 people, most of whom were Black men and boys, and often engaged in cannibalism and necrophilia.
Biles’ tweet was met with plenty of support from her 1.7 million followers, with one person replying: “I do not understand why people are into this guy. Where have we gone as a society that there are people glamorize him?”

Another person echoed: “It’s crazy someone has to say this,” while a third wrote: “So disgusting. The new series is making everyone weird.”
“So gross. NO ONE should be profiting from these horrific crimes,” tweeted a fourth person, with a fifth adding: “Dahmer targeted marginalised communities because he knew the police wouldn’t investigate it at the level of straight white men. I cannot fathom anyone dressing as him for Halloween. It’s so disrespectful to both the Black and Brown gay community.”
Earlier this month, eBay confirmed to Buzzfeed that it had banned the sale of Dahmer-inspired costumes in the run-up to Halloween, saying that such items ‘violate its policy on violence and violent criminals’.

eBay’s violence and violent criminals policy reads: “Listings that promote or glorify violence or violent acts, or are associated with individuals who are notorious for committing violent acts, are not allowed.”
It also notes: “Sellers can't list items [that] promote or glorify violence towards humans or animals.”
Another of eBay’s guidelines states: “Films, images, or devices that contain or claim to contain real acts of violence, rape, execution, torture, crime scenes, morgues, dead bodies or body parts of dead persons.”
