Fans demand disqualification after Olympic match erupts in mass brawl in the final seconds

Hockey fans are calling for the Chinese Olympic team to be disqualified after a brawl broke out between the country and Belgium.

When it comes to the Olympics, you can expect a bit of drama... but most weren’t prepared for what happened at the end of the Women's Field Hockey semi-final earlier today (August 8).

Belgium and China ended up in a fierce clash that saw athletes from both countries’ benches storm the field to break up the two teams.

Footage of the clash has begun circulating on social media and some have gone as far to call for the Chinese team to be disqualified.

In the final seconds of the match came to a close, the game tied at 1-1, Chinese player Fan Yunxia actions have really infuriated some people.

Yunxia pelted the ball at Delphine-Dapne Marien at a close range causing the Belgian to instantly drop to the floor, clearly in pain.

Her teammates then rushed into the face of Yunxia to confront her for her actions. Belgium’s Judith Vandermeirin got right into Yunxia’s face, pushing her away.

As a result, she received a yellow card and a 10 minute suspension but continued to argue her point.

Still arguing with her point to the officials a video captured her saying: “I’m protecting my team-mate. You cannot do that.”

Commentators also took issue with it, with Eurosport commentator Charlie Brougham saying: "Well, that’s a little unnecessary from Fan. She just hammered the ball as the hooter sounded and hit one of the Belgian players.

"The whistle goes, and she just rifles it straight at the player."

Despite the conflict, the match went into penalties as planned where China was able to come out with the victory.

On social media, this end result didn’t sit well with many viewers.

“If it's a yellow for a push fair enough. But how is it not a red for deliberately hitting another player after the final whistle? Straight as a roundabout,” one person commented.

"Absolutely disgraceful from the Chinese hockey player and from the referee. Issuing a yellow card to the Belgian No.7 at all is mental, but issuing it first like this is shocking!"

And another added: "The Chinese player took a look before hitting it. That was seriously foul play. It's a red card."

“How is that not a red card battering the ball at someone is surely more serious than a little push," a third said. “China had to be disqualified for this!”

As things stand, China is set to play the Netherlands for the Gold Medal Match on Friday evening (9 August).

As a result of the difference in depth, an issue called 'slow' swimming is created where the water is more volatile when dispersed than in a deeper pool.

The Algerian boxer faced Italy's Angela Carini in the round of 16 match on 1 August when Carini - who has since apologised - decided to abandon the match after 46 seconds.

Khelif - who was born and raised a girl - was disqualified from last year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi amid claims from the International Boxing Association that she was not able to meet their unspecified eligibility criteria.

Khelif has since been at the centre of a gender row, and has urged people to 'refrain from bullying all athletes' amid abuse online.

The Paraguayan swimmer was said to have been asked to leave the village amid accusations of creating an 'inappropriate environment', according to a statement from her team.

Alonso - who also announced her retirement from the sport - has since denied the claims and urged people to 'stop spreading false information'.
