Driver Captures Heart-Stopping Moment Thousands Of Bats Fly Out Of Cave

If you don't like bats, it's the stuff of nightmare, but it's undeniably a stunning sight

A car in Mexico was mooching down a road at precisely the right moment to capture the sight of thousands of bats emerging from a cave.

In the stunning footage taken from the vehicle, the sky can be seen filling with vast clouds of bats, as they stream out of the cave and fly into the distance.

It is not clear when the video was taken, but the cave in question is reportedly Cueva de los Murciélagos in Sinaloa, Mexico.

Of course, if you don't like bats, it's the stuff of nightmares - but it's undeniably an amazing sight.

Watch here:

The video has been viewed more than 3.7 million times on Twitter, with many speculating that there could in fact be millions of bats emerging from the cave in the footage - though obviously it's quite tricky to do a headcount.

Biologist Matt Ridley tweeted: "An astonishing sight. No wonder certain respiratory viruses thrive in such large and dense concentrations of mammals.

"The largest bat roost in the world has about the same number of mammals in it as the largest city in the world: 20 million."

While the video may be breathtaking, its shock factor is somewhat diminished by the fact the cave is called Cueva de los Murciélagos, which means Cave of Bats. So yeah, the clue is kind of in the name.

I think we can all agree bats are at their most terrifying though when they come swooping by out of nowhere, in your kitchen say - unless of course you're in a 'Kitchen of Bats'.

As well as giving us terrible frights, bats in kitchens can bring us great laughs too.

I'm thinking specifically about the viral video from 2017, in which an Irish family desperately attempt to shoo an unwelcome bat out of their kitchen.

If you don't know what I'm on about, you're in for a treat here:

In the fantastic video, which racked up millions and millions of views across social media, the family can be seen desperately scrambling to get rid of the flying mammal, which brings chaos to their home.

The footage was recorded by Tadhg Fleming, who told JOE: "My father (with my football shorts and long wooly socks) tried to first catch the bat with a tea towel, then opted for a larger towel which the mother just ironed!

"From there, myself and my mother hid behind the doors to let my father take on the bat one on one."
