Man stopped by airport security over surprise Christmas gift his grandmother told him not to open

Keeping a promise to grandma comes before everything else, even airport security guidelines apparently.

Travelling is the epicentre of ugh. You’ve got the hustle and bustle of rushing to the airport, then there’s the nightmare of security until you’re sat in the departure lounge for what feels like a lifetime. It’s a whole event.

Now, imagine you’re carrying a mysterious briefcase and see how much harder that would be.

This is what TikToker Brett Gaffney had to deal with after his grandmother gave him an early Christmas gift before his flight home.

Gaffney, from Kansas, visited his granny and was told that he was absolutely not to open his present before he landed back in California.

Ominous.

Unfortunately, it seems as though dear gran forgot about TSA agents and their reputation.

Obviously, it wasn’t going to be smooth sailing.

Taking to TikTok to share the story to his followers, he detailed how this old looking briefcase caused his so many issues in the airport.

Not only did the massive briefcase set off one of the detectors at the airport as it through, but it also created some major red flags in the minds of security when they realised he had no idea what was in it.

Brett Gaffney promised his grandmother he wouldn't open his gift until after he landed.

He said: “I got stopped [by] the airport security, and you know what it was because of this briefcase my grandma gave me as an early Christmas gift, and she said don’t open it until you get to California.”

“I was like, ‘What is in the briefcase? It’s super heavy,'” Gaffney asked his grandmother before leaving to fly back.

‘Just wait till you get there,’ is what she replied.

But that little detail is why he almost got arrested.

“I was like, ‘Grandma, I’m going to the airport, like I need to know,” Gaffney claimed.

After his briefcase alerted airport security, they began to question him about what was inside.

“They asked me what was inside, and I said I don’t know, I don’t know,” he said.

“They said, ‘What do you mean? You’re bringing a briefcase, and you don’t know what’s inside?’”

The secret? A typewriter.

Gaffney went on to explain to the agents that the gift was a surprise before going on to unbuckle the case to reveal the mystery item.

A typewriter.

“Who am I Tom Hanks?’ Am I going to go to the park and…write a whole book with a typewriter?” Gaffney joked in the video, taking aim at the actor who owns 250 of the writing machines.

But it didn’t end there.

In an update, he went on to show his viewers a clip of him dusting off the typewriter ready to be used.

Even though it caused a lot of trouble, viewers were quick to praise him for keeping his promise to his nan and not opening it, even before going through security.

“I feel like the words 'I don’t know, it’s a surprise' shouldn’t be uttered to TSA, let alone in one sitting,” one person commented.

Another wrote: “The fact u listened and didn’t open it is so innocent lmao.”

A third person commented: “There still is a Great American novel to be written and now you have the tools.”

Regardless of the headache, it was a pretty cute thought from his grandma. What do you think?
