Family Guy exec causes controversy after railing against people who dress comfy on flights

Gary Janetti was promoting his new travel-inspired book when he made the jaw-dropping claim

Family Guy producer Gary Janetti caused a furious social media storm after claiming he’s fed up with plane passengers rocking wearing a particular item of clothing.

Janetti, 58, has been a consulting producer on Family Guy since 1999 and has previously worked on TV series such as Will & Grace, 1995’s The Naked Truth and the Sir Ian McKellen-led sitcom, Vicious.

As well as writing and producing some of our favorite shows, the New York-born creative has appeared in episodes of Bunheads, Bette and has written three books - the latest of which is titled We Are Experiencing A Slight Delay.

To promote his new, travel-inspired read, Janetti was invited onto ABC News earlier this week and was quizzed by Linsey Davis on his travel non-negotiables.

During one segment, the 46-year-old broadcaster asked the star whether he believed wearing sweatpants on an aeroplane was socially acceptable.

Despite many opting to travel in cosy comfort, Janetti is apparently dead-set against slipping into sweatpants upon boarding your flight.

“Yeah, no sweatpants,” he began, before Davis cut in and said: “That’s totally me!”

Explaining his anti-sweatpants stance, the author continued: “It looks like at the airport, too many people are on day five of the flu. Like they’ve been in bed for a week.

“How comfortable do you have to be to get on a three-hour flight? I don’t know you could have pants that button or a shirt that buttons.”

While the writer is against sweats, it turns out there’s one reason why it’s okay to wear your comfy clothes onboard.

He explained that he believes the garments are appropriate if you plan on ‘going to bed’ aboard the flight or you’re taking a cross-country red-eye.

“Overnight flights, I’ll give you that,” he added.

Following Janetti’s controversial statement on ABC News, a clip of the conversation has gone viral across social media and viewers have been having their say.

After watching the clip, one TikTok user wrote: “I always am comfortable because one time I decided to be cute and I was soo uncomfortable on the plane, I get bloated on planes and my jeans were hurting me. So just sweats now.”

A second said: “I AM NOT WEARING JEANS ON A FLIGHT. LEGGINGS OR SWEATPANTS ONLY."

A third commented: "Nothing wrong with being comfortable."

However, some were in agreement.

“Totally agree. Look presentable,” argued another user.

A fifth echoed: “As a flight attendant I couldn’t agree more.”

Someone else penned: “Wearing sweatpants is fine. Especially on flights over 5 hours. Only wear business casual if I am traveling for work.”
