A grieving mother has shared the heartbreaking final words of her seven-year-old son who was swept away in floodwaters alongside his grandparents.

Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction last month, with some even tragically losing their lives as a result of the natural disaster.

Megan Drye had taken shelter on the roof of her home in Asheville, North Carolina with her son Micah and her parents when the hurricane arrived.

Powerful floodwaters were quickly rising in North Carolina, so the family had to head towards the top of the house for higher ground.

However, the house collapsed, sending the family plummeting into the water.

Megan survived after becoming pinned between two pieces of debris, which allowed rescue teams to come in and save her.

Micah and Megan's parents were swept away by the floods, with the boy's body being found around a quarter of a mile from where the mom was rescued.

As Micah was carried away by the devastating flood water, he 'called out to the one God almighty', according to Megan.

She told Fox Weather: "He reached for something past flesh, past human, past anything that even grown adults, I think, would reach for.

"My son called out to the one God Almighty. And I think at that moment he was rescued, and he became my hero, and I think all of them carried me through that moment."

Megan was stuck wedged between the debris for a period of three hours before rescue teams arrived and helped her out.

She added: "In the midst of the chaos, all I heard was God telling me to be still and to stop fighting the water.

"That was Him, that was prayers. That was prayers that told me to be still and to let the water carry me to where I needed to be rescued.

"My grief today is unfathomable. I'm sorrowful. I feel broken.

"But what is the main thing that I take away from grief is the uplifting of all the prayers that I have received."

A GoFundMe page has since been set up to support Megan after losing her parents and child.

At the time of writing, the fundraiser has seen more than $160,000 raised.

The GoFundMe states: "For Megan Drye, our miracle, who has lived a mother’s worst nightmare.

"She has survived the unimaginable and lost absolutely everything. The support of others will carry her and encourage her to keep taking one breath, one step, and one day at a time."
