Man bought old storage unit worth $7,500,000 for $500 but had to return huge amount for unfortunate reason

Storage War's Dan Dotson was stunned to hear the story

Money makes the world go round, as the old saying goes.

We could all do with a little extra cash, but what if you were to become a millionaire overnight? Perhaps you discover a family heirloom, forgotten in the back of your closet, that could earn you the mega bucks.

But for one man, it was purchasing a storage unit that changed his life completely.

According to Storage Wars star and auctioneer Dan Dotson, a client bought a supposedly abandoned unit at auction for $500.

Any storage unit that has not been paid for three months in a row is allowed to be auctioned off - as TV fans will already know.

The show sees people purchase the random units in hopes of finding something valuable inside.

The man in question opened his newly-bought unit to discover another safe inside - containing a staggering $7,500,000.

Dotson shared the almost unbelievable tale in a 2018 YouTube video.

He explained the man missed out on the full amount of cash thanks to an unfortunate reason.

In the three-minute video, Dan told of how he was approached by a woman at an event, who told him that a family friend had recently purchased a storage unit that he had auctioned off.

Everyone was surprised to learn of the stacks of cash it was storing.

The new owners of the unit then got received an unexpected call from the original unit owner's attorney. They had offered the man $600,000 to return the unit - cash included - but then upped the offer to $1.2 million.

The new owners decided to return the unit and the money, leaving them with a $1,199,500 profit. Not bad.

Dan reckoned the decision to return the cash was the right one, considering there was no telling where the cash had come from in the first place.

The unusual story sparked debate in the YouTube comments, where people shared what they'd have done.

One person simply wondered: "My question is with that much money in their safe why did they default on the unit?"

A second said: "I'd take what they was offering and be on my way and thank the good Lord for the blessing," as a third agreed: "Take the offer. It's the right thing to do."

A fourth reckoned: "Keep the money and run. I wouldn't have told any one in the first place."

And another wrote: "First I couldn't sleep at night knowing that my money sitting in a locker like that , Now is that money taxable, if it is I'd be long gone 7 million new name new life."
