Broadcasts from a radio station believed to have been set up by the Cuban intelligence directorate have been picked up on all across the US.

The HM01 is a shortwave numbers station which broadcasts mysterious messages - some of which allegedly contain encrypted messages intended for spies - and many of its messages have been picked up all over the US by random people.

HM01 was 'first heard' on 17 November, 2012, as per Priyom.

It notes: "The current HM01 schedule was developed starting in December 2012, and has not been changed since early 2015."

The broadcasts from the station consist of the 'same set of six messages on all schedules, starting at 16:00 UTC, and concluding at 10:00 UTC the following day'.

"Each one hour schedule of HM01 consists of two airings, on the hour and at the half hour, with a period of silence in between," Priyom continues.

It adds: "HM01 rotates its messages on a daily basis. When a message is new on the given slot, its counter (the last digit of the header) is set to one. On the second day, the counter is still set to one. From the third day onwards, the counter is incremented by one with each day. The day after the counter reaches eight, the message is replaced."

And many people across the US have heard the messages, taking to social media to share their findings.

In 2022, a Reddit user called u/TickletheEther who lives 'near Florida' took to thread r/signalidentification to share a recording of a broadcast they picked up featuring a voice they hear 'a lot,' questioning it it was 'maybe a Cuban numbers station'.

In the clip, you can hear a woman's voice speaking in Spanish, reciting various numbers.

Sharing a link to Priyom's page on HM01, u/morcheeba replied: "Yep, that's her! I can hear her in Colorado, too."

And another user offered a bit more context on the mysterious broadcast.

Another user u/ mhwnc explained: "That's numbers station HM01 'Voce de la chica'. Believed to be used by the Cuban intelligence directorate to send messages to agents in the field (particularly targeting agents in the US).

"It is the successor to the V02a 'Atencion' which was a variant of V02 'Atencion' which was the center of the Cuban Five spy case which for the first time revealed decoded messages sent by the DGI to members of La Red Avispa (The Wasp Network) in attempts to infiltrate Anti-Castro activist groups in Miami.

"Pretty interesting history, and pretty sloppy execution (we know that it originates from the same location as Radio Havana, as HM01 messages have been heard over Radio Havana. We know that the computer that generates the voice runs on Windows XP as OS sounds have been heard during transmissions)."

While relations between the US and Cuba have since eased, calling into question the need for a spy broadcast - should that be what HM01 was first started for - Priyom's administrator Stefan Meyers told VICE: "There will always be a reason for espionage between countries - trade treaties, corporate spying etc."
