Apple's iOS 18 update is finally here - but there's a chance your phone won't be able to get it.

Apple releases its biggest iOS updates on a yearly basis - and 2024's was released today (Monday, September 16).

The new and highly anticipated update boasts a series of new features that you won't want to miss out on; one being a notable update to the iPhone Control Center.

The new update 'features new groups of controls, which you can access more fluidly with a single, continuous swipe down on the Home Screen', as per Apple's website.

You can also rearrange and resize your controls with iOS 18, meaning you can easily access all the ones you use the most.

Another update that will be handy for all you avid hikers out there is the option to save hikes on Apple Maps to your device so that you can access them when you're offline (which is a common occurrence while walking out in remote and rural areas).

You can also create and customize your own routes. Fancy!

If that's wasn't enough to peak your interest, you'll also be able to create personalized emojis.

Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federigh, insists there's something 'for everyone' with the new update.

"We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18," he said. "It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customisation and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages.

"There are so many benefits for everyone."

While the new update undeniably sounds great, the real question is if you'll be able to access it - and it depends on the iPhone model you have.

Basically, if you have a model that's from 2018 onwards then you should be able to get the update.

The devices released over this time frame include the iPhone XS and XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone SE 2, all the way to its newest model, the iPhone 16.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 16 began on Friday (September 13), with the devices hitting shelves this week (September 20).

Like the iOS 18, the iPhone 16 comes with a host of impressive upgrades - colors included. The new device will be available in five shades; white, black, ultra marine, teal and pink.

Apple have also promised that the new iPhone's screen will be 50 percent tougher than the original shield as it's made out of a 'new glass ceramic formulation'.
