Man who posted the most liked Instagram photo of all time claims it was just a ‘fluke’

The photo beat a post from Kylie Jenner by millions of likes

A lot of people out there would probably love to have the 'most-liked' Instagram post of all time, but one man who actually achieved that title has admitted it was a complete 'fluke'.

Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez and Cristiano Ronaldo are all big stars on Instagram, but in 2019 every single famous face got beaten when it came to the number of likes.

It all began in January of that year, after a man named Chris Godfrey became aware that Jenner was the current record holder for the most likes on the platform.

It's not entirely surprising, but Godfrey, with the help of two friends, took it as a challenge and decided to see whether he could beat that record.

Now, if you're wondering who Godfrey is, and what makes him special enough to have the most-liked post on Instagram, you're probably not alone.

The thing is, Godfrey is not an influencer, a movie star or a football star; he's simply a man who worked in advertising, and he set himself a big goal.

As per The New York Times, Godfrey recalled thinking: “Could something as universal and simple as an egg be great enough to beat that record?”

Noting that an egg has 'no gender, race or religion', Godfrey shared the post with the caption: "Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this."

Within just nine days, the post managed to rack up enough likes to send Jenner into second place.

Not only that, but the egg beat Jenner's post by a mile, quickly earning more than 50 million likes in comparison to Jenner's 19 million.

Andrew Essex, chief executive and founder of the creative holding company Plan A, also spoke to The Times about the achievement and explained that it wasn't something that could have been planned - the post needed to get eyes on it in the first place in order to rack up likes.

“The fact that they were able to get a lot of people to look at a picture of the egg - it was the ultimate anomaly, just a complete freak event,” he said in part.

In response to this claim, Godfrey admitted that the success of the egg was a complete coincidence.

However, he added: "It’s a fluke that caught the world’s attention. It’s what you do with that attention that counts.”

Fluke or not, Godfrey and his team achieved their goal, and it soon emerged that the egg was not just an egg, after all.

Shortly after the image first came into existence, more photos appeared on the same account showing the famous egg starting to crack.

Fans were left wondering for a while what this could mean, but it eventually came to light that the egg was cracking under the weight of pressure from social media fame - revealing itself to be part of a publicity campaign for Mental Health America.

The post has since been overtaken by Lionel Messi who shared a pic of himself celebrating winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022.
