Andrew Garfield has responded to the viral rumours that he’s 'retired' from acting, saying he doesn’t really know where the viral reaction ‘came from’.
Earlier this week, Garfield revealed he was going to step back from acting for a while to enjoy some well-earned downtime, having had a busy start to 2022 after starring The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick … Boom!, and now with a new role in Under the Banner of Heaven opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones.
The 38-year-old told Variety: "I’m going to rest for a little bit. I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for awhile.

"Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season.”
He added: "I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while."
But these words ended up spiralling out of control online, as many people speculated that this was Garfield’s way of announcing his retirement.

Speaking on The View, Garfield explained that things had simply been blown slightly out of proportion, saying he simply needed a bit of a break.
He began by joking: “Yeah, I'm retired from acting. No, I'm done. I have no desire to do... I have enough money to live in a camper van for the rest of my life and I'm done.”
Addressing the rumours seriously, Garfield then said: “No, I don't know where that came from. I'm just having a holiday."
When host Joy Behar asked what started it, he replied: “I just said I'm gonna rest, I'm gonna have a holiday, and I think people just make a story out nothing.

“I've been working hard and I've been loving the work that I'm doing, but also, I need to take a month or so. A month of a break, maybe two."
Elsewhere in the programme, Garfield also revealed what he was doing during THAT Oscars moment.
The Spider-Man actor was in the audience when Will Smith stormed onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
Shortly after the incident, a snap of Garfield staring intently at his phone went viral, with social media users pondering over what he was up to and if he was casually texting some pals about what had just gone down.
Garfield recalled: “So, I feel so bad because, you know, Kevin Costner’s introducing the director nominees in the most beautiful and elegant way, and I’m like, ‘There’s no way I’m gonna be on camera during this'.

“And everyone’s texting me, asking me, you know, what they’re asking me, like what the vibe in the room is. At that moment, my friends took priority over Kevin. But I feel really bad about that.”
The actor was then pressed on exactly what he’d been texting about, but he remained tight lipped and refused to spill any extra details.
So much so, that Garfield went on to say he wouldn’t be commenting on the slap at all.
He went on: “Everything’s been said. There’s no need for me to weigh in on that.

“Every possible version of the discussion has happened, and I have no interest in adding my voice to something that’s already been so well spoken [about].”
