Now, however, his manager Howie Hubberman has confirmed that his death was related to an accidental drug overdose.
Hubberman said in a statement to PEOPLE that Binzer had died as a result of 'a combination of prescription drugs and street purchased drugs'.
He went on to further tell the outlet: "Seth Binzer, after struggling with addiction and Crazy Town's rapid success with Butterfly, never was able to reach out on a more successful level to deal with his addictions.

"We all tried, but ultimately we all failed, or Shifty would still be here."
He went on to pay tribute to the singer, saying: "Shifty was a friend and really wanted to get himself fixed - unfortunately no one had the exact tools to do this, myself included."
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not listed a cause of death due to pending toxicology reports.
The singer had long been open about his experiences with substance abuse.

Binzer had previously posted to his Instagram page about his journey, writing: "I’m a lover than a fighter… but the one I need to love more, instead of fight with, is myself... Mr shifty true love #Sober, alive and grateful."
And fans have paid tribute to Binzer in posts and comments on social media.
One fan wrote: "RIP Shifty Shellshock from Crazy Town. There’s no denying Butterfly was an absolute banger."

A second posted: "Looks like Shifty Shellshock from Crazy Town passed away last night. Sad. Condolences to his family."
A third fan commented: "Deeply saddened by the news that Crazytown's Shifty Shellshock passed away. Butterfly is, unironically, one of my all-time favorite songs."
Binzer co-founded the band Crazy Town in 1999 after he and his fellow frontman Bret Mazur met a few years earlier.
The star had brushes with the law during his life, including in 2012, when he was sentenced to three years' on probation.

The sentence came after Binzer was convicted of possession of crack cocaine and domestic violence charges.
In an apology after the incident, he told TMZ: "I would like to sincerely apologize to the parties involved... I feel very bad for those who I have offended and those who have endured this situation."
