The debate over tips continues to heat up after a restaurant tried one sneaky tactic.

Tipping is normal for millions of Americans across the country. Some prefer to tip 15 percent, others 10, and some 5, if they are given the opportunity.

While tipping is a regular thing for Americans, people from other countries often question why it is such a big deal not to tip.

But one incident has seen the debate reignite after a restaurant appeared to try and trick guests into forking over money.

People on Reddit expressed their disgust and annoyance at the attempt to get people to tip when they have no legal requirement to do so and should also have the clear option to not tip, if they see fit.

The image, shared on the mildlyinfuriating Reddit board has already racked up over 81,000 upvotes and more than 3,000 comments.

The picture shows a touch screen card reader with multiple options for tipping, including 13%, 15% and 18%. As well as this, there is a cash tipping option and another option to input your own percentage.

The third option, that is believed to be ‘no tip’ is covered by a sticker that reads ‘tip, thank you’.

The original poster, Reddit_Lemur did not give any more information about what restaurant it was or in what American state but the comments erupted all the same.

“Look them in the eye as you peel the thing off. Make a statement silently,” one user commented.

“You can reach out to their payment processors. They typically don't allow such modifications on the hardware even if it is a simple sticker. It's scummy practice,” another added

“I'm picking them stickers off while making eye contact with the cashier. Also never going back to that establishment,” commented a third.

“I consider myself a generous tipper but I wouldn't tip at all if this is how they're going to play this game,” another added.

While some remarked they would leave a 0.01$ tip as a statement or act of defiance, others had other workarounds that would result in giving the establishment no money.

Some users simply said they would either click cash tip and leave nothing, or they would click percentage tip and then click 0%.

The poster remarked that as the card reader was touch screen, he simply pressed the sticker, assuming it said ‘no tip’ beneath it.

What would you do? Would you tip anyway or would you refuse?
