Freddie Prinze Jr is officially returning for a hotly anticipated legacy sequel.
No, they're not remaking the 1999 rom-com She's All That, nor he'll reprise the role of Fred Jones in a new Scooby-Doo outing, sadly.
Prinze Jr, now 48 years old, was only 21 when he snagged a role in the 1997 horror film that has become so popular it's getting a reboot.

Written by Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson's Creek), the original starred Prinze Jr, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe.
Following the announcement that the beloved classic, called I Know What You Did Last Summer, would get the reboot treatment, Prinze Jr has now officially signed to reprise his original role.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is set for a summer release next year. It will be a direct sequel to the first film and its 1998 follow-up, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s safe to say these younger players will have to grapple with the deadly events rocking the seaside town of Southport, New Carolina, about three decades prior. Much like Scream (2022), the upcoming entry in the hook-wielding murderer franchise will see the Fisherman killer terrorise a bunch of new protagonists who'll seek the help of the OG survivors.
Prinze Jr will star as Ray Bronson, a role he played in the first two films. Deadline revealed the actor is onboard after negotiations with Sony Pictures. Hewitt appears to be still in talks to return as Julie James, though there hasn't been an official confirmation as of yet.
The new film stars Bodies Bodies Bodies' Chase Sui Wonders, Glass Onion's Madelyn Cline, The Wilds' Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta's Tyriq Withers, and The Little Mermaid's Jonah Hauer-King.

Even if you haven't watched the 1997 film, you'll probably guess why Gellar and Phillippe won't make an appearance this time around, though one can count on their characters, Helen Shivers and Barry Cox, being at least mentioned in the sequel.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson — known for directing the Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes' dark comedy Do Revenge and for co-writing Thor: Love and Thunder — is attached to helm the horror. The script was co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky from a draft by Leah McKendrick.
Mendes was initially part of the cast of I Know What You Did Last Summer but had to leave the project earlier this month, possibly due to a scheduling conflict with Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films Masters of the Universe in which she's set to play Teela. Wonders joined the cast of the horror reboot shortly after Mendes' exit.
