Jamie Campbell Bower has said he is ‘angry’ about his Stranger Things character’s backstory, explaining that Vecna has ‘more humanity than other characters’.
Viewers were introduced to Vecna in the most recent season of Netflix’s blockbuster series and the villain certainly had a complex past, having been experimented on in the Hawkins National Laboratory after murdering his family as a young boy.
Eventually, Vecna was banished to the Upside Down by Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven, but Bower suggests he sympathises with Vecna as he ‘grew up in an environment where his father murdered a civilian family’.
Vecna’s father, Victor Creel, accidentally bombed the wrong home and killed the family inside while serving as a soldier in WWII.

Speaking to Variety this month, Bower referenced his character’s father’s past when he was asked whether or not he thought Vecna ‘ever had a chance’ of turning out OK.
Bower replied: “He grew up in an environment where his father murdered a villain and a civilian family on the orders of people he never knew, who were presenting themselves as these upstanding citizens.”
He added: "In whose eyes are they upstanding? I'm still angry about it now!"

The actor also said Vecna had ‘more humanity than perhaps any others’ and notes that when his character was banished to another dimension by Eleven he was ‘stripped down to rage and resentment’.
"That is enraging. It's more than that — it's hate-fuelling. It's irritating. It's actually really irritating," Bower said, adding: “She takes everything away from him — everything that he possibly could have had, is now gone because of her.”
Bower’s comments came after he floored fans by sharing a clip of himself recording Vecna's voice in behind-the-scenes footage shared on Instagram.

Earlier this month, Bower uploaded footage of himself doing some automated dialogue replacement (ADR) work 'a few weeks before release'.
The caption on Bower’s video read: "Taken by the best duo in the world The Duffers. @strangerthingstv @netflix," and the actor could be seen performing a part of the script which features in the last episode of season four.
Multiple social media users flocked to the post in shock, revealing they thought Vecna's voice was a result of voice effects.
"YOUR VOICEEE!!?!!???" one commented. Another said: "How is your voice so deep i cant."

The post has amassed over three million views, with fans in disbelief that Vecna's voice wasn't a result of editing but Bower's own range and skill.
