Netflix Announces Its New Spy Kids For Rebooted Film

Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez and Shazam star Zachary Levi will play the parents.

Netflix has officially announced the cast for its upcoming Spy Kids reboot film.

The classic family friendly action film will soon be back on our screens with a brand-new cast, led by Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez and Shazam actor Zachary Levi.

The two adult stars will be joined by youngsters Everly Carganilla and newcomer Connor Esterson as the titular spies who become involved in their parents' espionage organisation.

Robert Rodriguez, the director who helmed the 2001 original film, will return to write, direct and produce the upcoming Netflix version, which will have a similar concept but will focus on a brand new family.

The plot per Netflix will see the two children of the world's greatest secret agent unwittingly assist an almighty video game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of the world's technology.

News of the reboot first came to light in January 2021 when Deadline reported Skydance Media had secured the rights to produce a reimagined version of the film with the assistance of Rodriguez and Spyglass Media Group. Netflix closed a deal to produce the reboot in March.

Rodriguez was known for directing 'grown-up' films, including Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn, however he wanted to produce a project his children could watch.

This led to him creating the Spy Kids franchise, which has spawned four films, an animated series and several books and soundtracks.

The first film was released in March 2001 and grossed $147.9m (£119m) against a $35m (£28m) budget.

Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino starred as the parents – Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez – in the original franchise.

Meanwhile, the school-aged secret agents, Juni and Carmen Cortez, were played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara.

The franchise also featured roles portrayed by Danny Trejo, Alan Cumming, Teri Hatcher, Salma Hayek, Sylvester Stallone and George Clooney.

Two direct sequels followed the 2001 film; Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams in 2002 and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003.

A standalone sequel was released in 2011, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which focused on the family of Carmen and Juni’s aunt, played by Jessica Alba.

Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara returned for the film and the two child spies were played by future Girl Meets World star Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook. Ricky Gervais had a voice role of Argonaut, the family’s robot dog.

We're definitely intrigued to see the next Spy Kids adventure.
