Actor Tom Hanks is known for his brilliant acting skills, including making us laugh, cry and even fall in love with his on-screen characters.

Yet one of his films has had film fans 'bawling' at a character that's described as 'the grumpiest man in America'.

However, the film isn't supposed to have us upset but, in fact, laughing as it's been classed as a comedy on Netflix.

A Man Called Otto was released in 2022, but has been made recently available on the streaming platform.

The film is based on the book A Man Called Ove, and the Oscar-nominated Swedish film of the same name, which tells the story of a grumpy widower named Otto Anderson (Hanks), who seems to only find joy out of criticising and complaining about his neighbours.

After attempting to take his own life, he is interrupted by the arrival of his new neighbours, and forms an unexpected friendship with a heavily pregnant Marisol (Mariana Trevino) and her family.

Now classed as a comedy, you'd expect most reviews to have viewers describing how much they laughed. Yet fans have been left feeling the opposite, leading some to wonder why it's in the comedy category.

One person wrote on social media: "I was trying to find a movie to watch on Netflix, so under the COMEDY category I chose the movie A Man Called Otto not knowing what it was about and now I'm bawling my freaking eyes out with that."

Another said: "Watched ‘a man called otto’ on netflix yesterday and it somehow broke my heart and then put it all back together. what an incredible movie, cried lots."

A third called it a 'heartbreaking movie', while someone else said they were 'not prepared'.

A fourth added that it is 'NOT A COMEDY', with another also questioned it's labeling, adding that it made them 'cry and not from laughter'.

So moved were people by Hank's performance, they'd previously questioned how the star wasn't in line for an Oscar.

The film is also a family affair for Forest Gump actor as it stars his 27-year-old son Truman Hanks as the younger version of Otto.

In an interview with TODAY in 2023, Hanks said: "Truman, who is either burdened or blessed by resembling myself at the same age as him, and Marc Forster, our fabulous director, just says, 'You know what? It's always so fake to get somebody else to come in and play you, 'cause they never look right.

"Could maybe Truman do this?"
