Jim Carrey reportedly set to return for The Grinch 2

Jim Carrey reportedly set to return for The Grinch 2

A report earlier this year claimed The Grinch 2 was imminent and Jim Carrey would be making a return.

It is only a matter of weeks before Christmas, with many starting to get their decorations up and on display for the big day.

And what better way to get into the festive spirit as we head towards December than rewatching all the best Christmas movies.

One of the more popular festive delights is The Grinch - or How the Grinch Stole Christmas as it's officially known.

The Ron Howard directed movie is somehow be having its 23rd Christmas this year after releasing in 2000.

If that doesn't make you feel old, I don't know what will.

Starring Jim Carrey as the green goblin himself, The Grinch was initially met with mixed reviews when it released at the turn of the century.

However, it became a real Christmas favorite over time.

The film has never seen a sequel, though if reports earlier this year are to be believed, then we may not have to wait too many more Christmases for more Grinch action.

Earlier this year, Giant Freakin Robot reported that a sequel to The Grinch is imminent and that Carrey would be returning to the role.

The publication wrote: "Jim Carrey is returning to Universal Pictures for The Grinch 2, once again playing Dr. Seuss’s most famous and ill-tempered creation."

The February 2023 report didn't detail any information about how the story in The Grinch sequel could pan out, and if other actors involved in the 2000 film would be making a return.

It should be worth noting neither Carrey or Universal Pictures have said a word about the rumors since they began.

If Carrey does make a return for The Grinch 2, it will come as a bit of a surprise for fans as he has typically not been a fan of sequels.

Speaking to CinemaBlend in 2017, the actor said: " I find sequels are a function of commerce for the most part. At least the two I've done, they were characters I enjoyed doing, but I did find myself almost parroting myself at that point.

"When you put 10 years between you and the last time you did it, suddenly you're going, 'How did I do that again?'... So, you're imitating your original inspiration. It was super fun with Jeff, but I'm not a crazy sequel guy."

Returning as the Grinch may be lower down on Carrey's priority list as he is certainly more selective with his roles these days.

Telling Empire in 2022, Carrey admitted the role in the Christmas movie was a 'challenge'.

"It was all just: a challenge,' he said. " And at a certain point it got past that, and hopefully from everything that everyone is telling me, it got to the point where you saw the Grinch's soul."
