The showrunner of The Boys has explained why a particularly X-rated scene was included in the first episode of the new season, which dropped last week on 3 June.

The black comedy superhero series has returned with its third instalment on Amazon Prime, welcoming back the likes of Karl Urban, Jack Quiad, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso and co, alongside a number of new faces.

But viewers haven’t exactly been eased in to the new season, which kicked off with an extremely x-rated scene in the first episode.

Warning: Major spoilers lay ahead...

After Termite (Brett Geddes) throws a house party, he decides to leave to enjoy an intimate moment with his lover – putting his superpowers to use by shrinking down and actually venturing inside the man's penis.

Unfortunately, things don't work out too well for Termite when he sneezes in the midst of his penis travels, causing him to go back to his full size while still inside the man's penis.

As you might expect, this leads to a lot of damage – leaving viewers squirming with shock and disgust.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Eric Kripke insisted that the surreal 'crawling-into-a-urethra' sequence was not just an attempt to outdo the ridiculousness of any previous moments.

“We really try hard not to get into the game of ‘How do we top ourselves?’” he said.

“I think that’s a trap. You’ll end up with something that’s too bloated, or more importantly, insincere. We always say, ‘Don’t go bigger; go deeper.’ In that case, literally. What new facet of the character can we reveal, or of the world? This ongoing notion of ‘What would happen if you took superpowers, which are ridiculous, and put them in the real world?’

"If you had an Ant-Man power, those types of situations would ultimately happen.”

Laughing, he continued: “I think way more about how to keep ratcheting up character conflict and stakes and reveal more about who these people are. I worry about that a lot. I worry about the size of the set pieces almost never.”

The scene left many viewers feeling disgusted, with one person admitting it had an actual physical impact on them.

"Not gonna lie, my penis still numb after watching the first episode of the boys, that termite scene is really something," the Twitter user wrote.

Another commented: "Um the boys s3 is… [definitely something]. why did i need to see the inside of a penis? i could have lived my whole life without seeing that genuinely traumatized.”
