People are calling for Matthew McConaughey to run for president after he gave an emotional speech at the White House.
The actor called for greater gun control in the wake of the Uvalde mass shooting where 19 students and two teachers were killed by a shooter who was later gunned down by US border patrol officers.
Uvalde is McConaughey's hometown and his powerful plea for politicians to change the laws in the wake of yet another mass shooting has plenty wondering if he or someone like him should be running the country.
McConaughey spoke of the 'shared stories, tears and memories' he and his wife Camila experienced in Uvalde.

He also showed the audience a pair of shoes that had belonged to 10-year-old Maite Rodriguez, one of the victims of the shooting, and spoke of how those shoes had been the only clear way to identify the child's body after the shooting.
His call for politicians to make a meaningful change to gun control laws struck a chord with many Americans who are sick of the cycle of tragic mass shootings where politicians offer their thoughts and prayers to the victims but do nothing of substance, only for another mass shooting to occur.
Some people have even called for the actor to run for president, with one person saying US politics needed more 'people with actual common sense, who are passionate and actually care'.

Another admitted they would vote for him tomorrow if the choice was in front of them.
However, others were not so excited about the prospect of McConaughey entering the White House as he is a political amateur.
One pointed out that a person capturing the mood of the nation when speaking about a tragedy in their hometown is different to running the entire country.
Others despaired at the prospect of yet another celebrity in the White House rising to prominence off the back of their fame rather than any political track record.

Still, considering America's next choice is looking like it will be between Joe Biden and Donald Trump it's little surprise Matthew McConaughey looks like an appealing option.
If he ends up going into the next election, Biden will be 82 years old by the time he's sworn in for a second term.
Meanwhile, the 75-year-old Trump is no spring chicken himself and became one of the most divisive figures in American political history during his four years in the White House.
