The good folks over on Reddit have revealed the things you should never talk about on a first date.

While the dating scene is daunting enough, nothing tops the nerves present when meeting someone new.

You may have lucked out with a new outfit and some fancy aftershave, but what you say on the date is arguably the most important thing.

And to be honest, there are certainly topics that should not be discussed on that first date, with Redditors revealing what you should avoid talking about.

The dreaded ex

This should be a pretty obvious one, but talking about your ex on a date is never a good start.

When your date is trying to get to know you, the last thing they want to hear about is the messy divorce with your former partner.

However, one person on Reddit gave a differing point of view, saying: "In general, yes it's not a good idea to bring it up. But I've been on some dates where you're both mature enough to talk about your most recent situation."

Job interview

"Don’t make your date feel like they’re at a job interview more than a date," another Reddit user explained.

Someone else added: "Or, worse yet, make your date feel like they are the ones conducting a job interview. Ask some good questions back."

I mean, you want a date to have a free-flowing conversation and not feel like a nerve-inducing job interview.

Don't get drunk

Having a drink or two before even going on a date is common for many to combat the nerves. But the last thing you want is to get too drunk on a first date and look like a bit of a lightweight.

Furthermore, if you are under the influence of alcohol, then you are more likely to say something stupid and kill off the possibility of a second date.

Avoid the 'friend vibe'

This is a tricky one to maintain during a first date, as you want to give off that romantic feel (if there is one) without seeming too keen.

"She’s there on a date. So she expects some romance, some chemistry, some attraction. Therefore, don’t give off too much of a 'friend' vibe, although of course don’t be 'creepy' as well. Finding the line in between is important," one Redditor explained.

Politics and religion

Such topics are certainly divisive, so one Reddit user thinks it's best to avoid politics and religion on a first date.

"An unspoken rule is to avoid discussing politics or religion early," they penned.

However, a fellow user disagreed, saying: "I feel like it's better to discuss religion and politics early, because those are often deal breaker issues."

Happy dating!
