A bizarre theory has claimed that Travis Kelce was responsible for the Kansas City Chiefs’ defeat at the Super Bowl after he criticised a staple feature in one city’s culture.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Kelce was left looking glum on Sunday evening after his team suffered a brutal defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles at the Super Bowl 2025.
The Chiefs lost by 40 to 22 to the Eagles, in what marked their third consecutive play off at the NFL Championship final at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

But now, some online theorists have suggested that Kelce might be responsible for his team’s poor performance after he made a critical comment about the southern city.

Social media users claimed that Kelce, who is dating superstar singer Taylor Swift, brought bad luck on his team after ’talking s**t’ about New Orleans cuisine. Or as some might say, he was hit by 'Karma'.
A few days ahead of the championship final, discussing food in New Orleans, Kelce told reporters: “I’m not a gumbo guy.

"The crawfish and jambalaya, I’m just out on jambalaya and gumbo. I like seafood, I just don’t like it in a soup, in a brown soup."
Asked if it was the fact it was brown that was the problem, he said: “I think it’s that, yeah.”
Gumbo and jambalaya are Creole-rooted dishes that are considered staples in New Orleans cuisine.
Reacting to his comments following the Super Bowl loss, one wrote on Twitter: “Travis Kelce slandered gumbo and was rightfully punished.”

This led to a raft of support from those online, with one user writing on Reddit: “The Chiefs got that a** beat all because Travis Kelce angered the Spirits by talking s**t about our food.”
Another added: “I’m with you. F**k that s**t. Described our food using the word ‘pooey’. Nah. Better look [sic] next time.”
One user chimed in: “Ha ha, that’s what my kid said! Said he dissed our food so the spirits punished him and the team.”

Kelce’s comments came after he made a similar criticism during a podcast episode with his brother Jason Kelce late last year.
Speaking to his brother on their New Heights podcast, Kelce infuriated locals of the city after he described jambalaya as ‘pooey’.

During the October episode he event left his brother Jason stumped as he said: “It’s like a soupy rice and then it’s pooey.”
But while Kelce enraged some locals with his comments about their cuisine, he emphasized it had nothing to do with the city itself.
He told reporters ahead of the Super Bowl game: "Just because I don’t like to crack open spicy crab legs doesn’t mean I don’t like the city."
