A doctor has highlighted the many benefits for the body if you have regular sex, after a woman revealed she got intimate with her husband every day for a year.

Brittany Gibbons caused quite a stir after speaking about a challenge she and her partner gave themselves: to have sex every day for a full year.

Gibbons has spoken out publicly about this venture and how beneficial it was for her personally as well as her relationship as a whole, revealing how on a personal level, she grew more confident and was able to see herself as just as attractive as her husband does.

Writing for Women's Health, she said: "For the first time, I was more concerned with every part of sex that felt good than finding a flattering angle to hide my stomach or back fat.

"My body was being enjoyed by the both of us, equally."

While it is an impressive feat, the idea of having sex every day is something people have wondered about before, and a doctor has revealed the many benefits such intimacy can have.

Michelle DiBlasi, DO, chief of inpatient psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center spoke about whether it is safe to have so much sex.

According to The Healthy Report, she said: "The answer is whatever people are comfortable with. It’s safe to have sex every day, even multiple times a day.

"But it’s also OK to not have sex that often."

So that is good to know, at least!

The doctor also revealed some of the key benefits of having sex so regularly, and thankfully, there are quite a few.

DiBlasi revealed that having frequent sex reduces cortisol levels inside the body, and doing this can ultimately improve your mood.

She said: "This is a hormone that’s released when you’re under stress—so [having sex] lowers the stress in your body to make you feel calmer and it can help you sleep better at night."

As well as this, endorphins are released in your brain, known as the ‘happiness hormones’ which act as the body’s natural painkillers and mood boosters.

One of the other clear benefits the doctor pointed out is that regular sex can strengthen the connection between you and your partner.

This works on a hormonal level as the body produces oxytocin when we have sex, a hormone known to help us bond with others.

DiBlasi added: "And the nice thing about it is that after you have sex—or even just have close physical touching or cuddling—that oxytocin can last in your body for up to two days."
