Woman finds $500 in her KFC sandwich but gives it back

Woman finds $500 in her KFC sandwich but gives it back

Georgia resident JoAnn Oliver discovered the heap of cash in her KFC bag, but decided to do the right thing

A woman who found a large sum of money in her KFC sandwich remarkably did the right thing and returned it to the restaurant, saving the owner’s job in the process.

You see, someone working in that particular Kentucky Fried Chicken had clumsily misplaced the entire daily deposit for the restaurant, and it ended up in someone’s sandwich bag.

Luckily for them, it was JoAnn Oliver’s food order that it became mixed up with.

The Georgia resident found a sum of $543.10 inside her sandwich bag after making her order and leaving the restaurant, but – being an upstanding citizen – she called up the police to let them know what had happened and then took the money back to the very relieved KFC staff.

According to the City of Jackson Police Department: "Mrs. Oliver had gone to a local restaurant drive through on her lunch break and returned to work to enjoy her lunch.

“When she opened her lunch, and removed her sandwich, she was surprised to find $543.10 in cash under her sandwich.”

While most people would simply thank their lucky stars and keep hold of the money – or certainly have a bit of an ethical dilemma about it – Oliver brought the money right back.

According to the police statement, the ‘restaurant's daily deposit had accidentally been placed in her sandwich bag.’

How exactly something like that happens is anyone’s guess, but stranger things have certainly happened, right?

The police statement continued: "Not only did Mrs. Oliver do the right thing but she saved the manager's job.

"Mrs. Oliver thank you for reminding us that we have amazing Citizens in Jackson and it's people like you that make us great!"

Even though she didn’t get to keep the cash, KFC did give her a free meal, refunding what she’d paid for her lunch.

Speaking to local media afterwards, Oliver did make mention of the fact that her husband is currently living with cancer and the family are up against around $2 million in medical bills, so she could have used the money.

The KFC staff were understandably relieved.

Still, she admitted that she considered keeping some of the cash ‘for a second’, but eventually decided that doing the right thing was – well – the right thing to do.

She cited karma as part of her reasoning for making the choice.

Oliver said: "If you don't do the right thing it's gonna come back on you,

"I mean It wasn't mine. I didn't need to keep it. I'll get mine in the future."

Hopefully she’s right.
