Second child dies five days after woman allegedly sent 'poisoned Easter eggs' to ex’s family in 'revenge' plot

A 13-year-old girl has died after a woman allegedly sent 'poisoned Easter eggs' to her family

A 13-year-old girl has died just days after her seven-year-old brother passed away after a woman allegedly sent 'poisoned Easter eggs' as an act of 'revenge' against her ex-boyfriend.

Mirian Lira, from Brazil, allegedly received chocolate Easter eggs from a woman named Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, which had a note attached that read: "With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter."

According to police, she then shared the chocolate with her two children, with her seven-year-old son, Luis, becoming 'severely ill' after consuming it.

Luis was found unresponsive, and despite the best efforts of his father Rafael performing CPR, the young boy went into cardiac arrest and died last Thursday (April 17).

Lira and her 13-year-old daughter, Evelyn Silva, were admitted to hospital in critical condition, and now it has been reported that the young girl has also died.

Health authorities have confirmed the teen's death was caused by a vascular shock linked to multiple organ failure, the Metro reports.

"Unfortunately, the clinical condition showed serious and rapid deterioration without responding to treatment," the hospital said.

Lira remains in hospital at this stage, though she is believed to be in a stable condition.

On April 21, Barbosa was arrested for allegedly poisoning the chocolate and sending it to Lira, who is dating Barbosa's ex-boyfriend.

She was caught by police when travelling home on a bus in Santa Inês, where she was discovered to have had a shopping receipt that indicated she had purchased the eggs.

As well as the receipt, she also found to have been in possession of two wigs, scissors, cards, a saw knife and other unknown substances, with CCTV footage seemingly showing Barbosa wearing a black wig while buying the chocolate.

When questioned by police, Barbosa admitted to buying the eggs in the run up to Easter, but claimed to police she did not poison them.

Authorities have also claimed that Barbosa had previously attempted this before.

Imperatriz reports that Barbosa allegedly went to Lira’s workplace to offer chocolate tasters to employees, but she was turned away, before heading to the parking lot to hand them out.

As per Brazilian news outlet G, Maurício Martins, Maranhão’s Department of Security Secretary, said: "The evidence suggests that the crime was motivated by revenge, by jealousy, given that the author’s ex-husband is the current partner or boyfriend of the victim, who was poisoned along with her two children."

UNILAD has previously contacted Polícia Civil do Maranhão for comment.
