A woman has shared how she managed to get out of a patch of quicksand.

Jamie Acord had been taking a stroll along the beach when she happened upon the weird phenomenon.

It's a trope many of us are familiar with from adventure movies - the hapless victim is crossing a perfectly solid-looking piece of ground only to suddenly find themselves knee deep.

Unless they can grab onto a friend or handy vine nearby, the hapless victim will slowly sink, with only their hat remaining perched on top as a grim reminder of their fate.

In reality, quicksand is a lot less deadly than the movies would have us believe.

You are very unlikely to be submerged in quicksand, but could still become trapped which could be a problem if you are in an isolated spot without any help.

Luckily for Jamie, however, her husband was on hand to help her out.

Recalling the incident in a post on social media, she warned other would-be beachgoers: "Just an FYI to all you peeps who love George Popham Beach I was there Saturday with my husband enjoying a leisurely stroll on the Beach along the high tide mark (almost to the dunes) when I fell into a sink hole.

"The state Park Rangers stated they have had some reports of the sand being like quick sand."

She continued: "I fell in up to my hips, that’s 2.5 feet. Patrick Acord said one minute I was there and the next I was not. I had to have him pull me out I could not do it on my own.

"I could not feel the bottom and I could not get a footing. My feet are scratched up as are my knees probably from rocks or sticks in the hole.

"Had I been a small child I would have disappeared into the hole. (I’m not kidding they would have been sucked in)."

Recalling what happened after she was pulled out, she said: "No sooner did Patrick pull me out did the hole disappear."

She went on to explain how the sand came about on the beach, writing: "The Rangers said that because of the flooding and erosion over the last year the river near Morse mountain is now curving around the front of the beach into the ocean and it’s causing the quicksand-like sand on the beach to cause people to struggle more or get stuck when walking."
