Spanish Duke forced by law to shorten daughter’s 25-word name

Spanish Duke forced by law to shorten daughter’s 25-word name

Fernando Fitz-James Stuart has to shorten his daughter's name if he wants her to be legally registered

If you thought King Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor was a long name, then you'll be surprised at what a Spanish duke has named his daughter.

Most people have around three names (a first, middle and surname), but Spanish aristocrat Fernando Fitz-James Stuart gave his second-born daughter a whopping 11 names.

The 17th Duke of Huéscar, who is married to Sofía Palazuelo, welcomed their second child on January 10.

Sofía gave birth Hospital Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Madrid - the same hospital she welcomed the couple's first daughter, Rosario, in September 2020.

Their first-born daughter's full name is Rosario Matilde Sofía Cayetana Dolores Teresa, and they've decided to make their youngest daughter's name even longer.

The tot was christened in Seville earlier this month, and was officially baptized as Sofía Fernanda Dolores Cayetana Teresa Ángela de la Cruz Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento del Perpetuo Socorro de la Santísima Trinidad y de Todos Los Santos.

You wouldn't want to try and say that after a few glasses of wine...

But, for baby Sofía to be put on the Civil Register, the tot's name must be shortened down to one compound name (hyphenated name) or two singular ones.

Typically in Spain, people also have two surnames made up of both the father and mother's surnames.

According to Spanish paper El Pais, the Duke and Duchess' second-born is named in honor of her mother and grandmother, Sofía Barroso, while her second name of Fernanda in tribute to her father, Fernando.

The publication added: "The girl will not be able to be registered in the Civil Registry with a string of names that surpass all rules, even though it is a tribute to the deceased Duchess of Alba and other members of the family and includes religious devotions."

Elsewhere, news site El Plural joked that the royal pair had baptized their daughter 'with a name that does not fit in the headline'.

Fernando's grandmother, the 18th Duchess of Alba, was also known for her ridiculously long name.

She boasted 19 names and was called: María del Rosario Cayetana Paloma Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Fernanda Teresa Francisca de Paula Lourdes Antonia Josefa Fausta Rita Castor Dorotea Santa Esperanza Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva Falcó y Gurtubay.

It's reported that the late duchess was the most titled person in the world, according to the Guinness World Records.

And here's me thinking Akon's full name of Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam was the longest name in the world.
