Sony has given gamers a glimpse of what the upcoming Playstation controller will look like.
Things have come a long way since the first iconic design for the original Playstation.
The controllers started with that signature battleship grey, before switching up to black for the sleeker new PS2 when the follow-up console was released.

For the PS3, things were still broadly the same - after all, why fix what's not broken, right?
The third console was the first to make the controller wireless, rendering accidentally pulling the plug out in a moment of jubilation or frustration a thing of the past.
But it was at the PS4 that the design saw its first major overhaul.
Now, the older controller was given a sleeker new body designed to have a more ergonomic grip.

A touch pad was also added in the centre of the controller, which while sleeker, was still strongly reflective of the classic 90s look.
The PS5 controller consolidated on this, making an even elegant design for Sony's latest iteration of the console.
Now, the corporation has offered a teaser for what the next console might look like.

Needless to say, it's left gamers rather divided. Though, in fairness, you could say that about more or less anything in the world of gaming.
So what does this idea for a new controller look like?
Well, it seemingly takes inspiration from minimalism, to the point where it barely looks like there's a controller at all.
Those classic buttons are still there, along with the joysticks.

But it seems that the new controller is missing a middle, with a large ring connecting the two sets of buttons to each other and leaving a hole in the middle.
But that's not it, as the buttons themselves also seem to have gone, replaced instead with trackpads on either side of the controller.
Needless to say, people had a lot of opinions and took to social media to share them.

I just want a good system that plays amazing triple A’s for a decade, that doesn’t have overheating problems or cheap HDMI’s and disk drives."
A second posted: "Bro we are taking about PlayStation which has had the exact same controller for nearly 30 years. They’re not going to replace the dpad lol."
Someone else highlighted a different problem, writing: "Most are playing PS4 games on the PS5. There's not many proper PS5 games and yet they want to start talking about a new console?"
