The actor had posted on the social media site: "They killed this dude named Jesus... what do you think they'll do to you?"
It was accompanied by the hashtags '#FakeFriends' and '#FakeLove', but the post attracted backlash and accusations of antisemitism from some.
Foxx ended up deleting the post and putting up a statement where he apologized to those who had been offended by what he had put on the site, and explained why he'd made the post in the first place.
"I want to apologize to the Jewish community and everyone who was offended by my post," he wrote on Instagram yesterday (5 August).

"I now know my choice of words have caused offense and I'm sorry. That was never my intent. To clarify, I was betrayed by a fake friend and that's what I meant with 'they' not anything more.
"I only have love in my heart for everyone. I love and support the Jewish community. My deepest apologies to anyone who was offended ❤️❤️❤️. Nothing but love always, Jamie Foxx."
Foxx's initial post was also reacted to by Friends star Jennifer Aniston, who had 'liked' the Instagram post and later took to her Stories to respond to some of the backlash the actor had experienced.

She wrote: "This really makes me sick. I did not 'like' this post on purpose or by accident.
"And more importantly I want to be clear to my friends and anyone hurt by this showing up in their feeds - I do NOT support any form of antisemitism."
"And I truly don't tolerate HATE of any kind. Period."

Earlier this year Jamie Foxx ended up in hospital with a 'medical complication', being hospitalised in April and not seen in public until July.
His family had previously said that he'd been 'out of hospital for weeks' and Foxx later lifted the lid on what the 'medical complication' had been like, saying he'd been through 'hell and back'.
"I cannot even begin to tell you how far it took me and how it brought me back. I went through something I thought I would never ever go through," he said, thanking fans for their support during his difficult time.
"To be honest with you, I just didn't want you to see me like that. I want you to see me laughing, having a good time, partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie [or] television show."

"I didn't want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was going to make it through."
