James Blunt said anyone who chooses You're Beautiful as wedding song is 'f***ed up' after revealing its true meaning

James Blunt said anyone who chooses You're Beautiful as wedding song is 'f***ed up' after revealing its true meaning

The track might be a ceremony staple but do you know the true meaning behind its lyrics?

When it comes to appropriate wedding songs, James Blunt thinks you’d be ludicrous to use his most famous track at yours.

Fans of the 50-year-old singer will know that his smash hit, ‘You’re Beautiful’ first featured on his debut album Back to Bedlam and was released as a single in 2005.

Since then, it has been parodied by the likes of 'Weird Al' Yankovic and has become a popular song for wedding ceremonies and civil services.

According to Hitched, other popular first dance songs include Elvis Presley’s ‘Can't Help Falling in Love’, Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Baby I’m Yours’ and ‘Pointless’ by Lewis Capaldi.

If you’ve never really paid much heed to the lyrics of ‘You’re Beautiful’ then you can probably understand why it’s a renowned go-to ‘I do’ song.

However, Blunt has previously revealed it’s a pretty awful choice given its hidden subject matter.

Much like The Stranglers’ ‘Golden Brown’ and The 1975’s ‘It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You’, ‘You’re Beautiful’ isn’t exactly a love song.

In fact, the musician himself has revealed it's pretty 'f***ed up' to have his track on a ceremonies soundtrack.

Speaking to HuffPost in 2017, Blunt said: “Everyone goes, ‘Ah, he’s so romantic. I want ‘You’re Beautiful’ as my wedding song.’ These people are f***ed up.

“You get labeled with these things like, ‘Oh, James Blunt. Isn’t he just a soft romantic?’ Well, f**k that. No, I’m not.

“‘You’re Beautiful’ is not this soft romantic f***ng song.”

During his rant, Blunt revealed that ‘You’re Beautiful’ is actually about a man who is stalking someone else’s girlfriend in the subway. Nice, right?

He told the publication: “It’s about a guy who’s high as a f***ng kite on drugs in the subway stalking someone else’s girlfriend when that guy is there in front of him, and he should be locked up or put in prison for being some kind of perv.”

The singer also revealed that he is ‘really lucky’ that his fans love the track so much, but that too much of a good thing can turn ‘bad eventually’.

The musician claimed his hit song wasn't as romantic as it seemed.

He added: “It got a lot of airplay, and it doesn’t take much to work out that kind of thing. I love hamburgers, but if you give me a hamburger for every meal I’m gonna tire of it.”

When asked if he finds the song ‘annoying’ Blunt said it wasn’t, but that it is when it’s shoved down people’s throats.

But hey, if you still love 'You’re Beautiful' don’t let the singer himself put you off!
