Having an internal monologue is certainly something that is far from uncommon, with the majority of people admitting to having one.
Whether it is Arnold Schwarzenegger telling us we did something stupid or perhaps the more plausible option of your own voice telling us we need more sleep.
Whatever it is, the majority of us have internal monologue of some kind - so when someone claims they have no internal monologue whatsoever, it can come as a bit of a surprise.

One person who claims to have no internal monologue told their story on Reddit, and for those who have an internal monologue it is quite hard to comprehend.
The user Vadermaulkylo penned: "Today, I told my mom that I have no internal monologue and she stared at me like I have three heads. Is having one common?"
The user went on to explain how they thought the method of thinking was a fictional concept made up as a narrative device in the TV show Dexter.

As you'd probably expect, many fellow Redditors flocked to the comment section of the post rinsing the person for not having an internal monologue.
Many labelled the poor Redditor as a non-playable character, though others told their experience of having an internal monologue.
"I would consider it a miracle if I ever had a single moment where just one thought was happening. It’s like a beehive up in here," one person wrote.
While a second added: "I can tell you right now I spend more time in my head than in any other place, conversations, etc. I live in my head. Me and my brain are best friends."

But the Redditor wasn't on his own as several other people on the thread described what it's like to have no internal monologue.
"I’m the same way. I don’t have any conscious thought about what I’m feeling, or any stream of dialogue describing it to myself," one remarked.
"I just feel it. It’s like the inner dialogue is the middle man in my head, who just isn’t there."

For other people, their thought processes are a lot more complicated.
"I don't have an inner monologue either. Any time I have to communicate outside my head with words, I have to 'translate' what I'm thinking," another Reddit user wrote.
"That takes time and effort. It's why I vastly prefer written communication over verbal, since you can take more time than the instant response a verbal conversation requires."
