Eagle-Eyed Viewers Spot Incredible Easter Egg In The Batman

The Batman director has confirmed a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it easter egg involving the Riddler

The Batman director Matt Reeves has responded to a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it easter egg involving the Riddler.

On Monday, 18 April, a Twitter user named Ryan shared a screenshot of Gotham City’s gloomy cityscape – or more precisely, of The Iceberg Lounge nightclub.

A dark figure is just about visible in one of the windows overlooking the club, prompting Ryan to ask whether or not it’s the Riddler spying on the Penguin-owned venue.

Incredibly, Reeves himself spotted the tweet – and his response is perfect.

Alongside a film still, Ryan tweeted: “Absolutely insane catch by my pal @ajrascals – at exactly 31:55 into #TheBatman you can actually SEE Paul Dano’s Riddler in the window opposite the iceberg lounge. Waiting, watching. Can you confirm 100% @mattreevesLA ?!”

A few hours later, Reeves replied: “Indeed. I can confirm, 100%.”

It's not the only easter egg fans have been excited by; last month, hawk-eyed viewers were left convinced Robert Pattinson’s Batman had accidentally provided Barry Keoghan’s Joker with the tools to escape Arkham Asylum.

In a deleted scene released in March, Batman paid the Joker a visit at the Arkham institute to try and enlist his help in catching Paul Dano’s Riddler.

Batman slipped the Joker a file packed with info about Dano’s villain, and easter egg junkies were quick to notice that while there were three paper clips attached to the documents when Batman handed it to the Joker, only two remained when it was passed back.

Convinced the paper clip would play a part in the Joker’s escape from Arkham Asylum, the internet lit up with theories, from: “Probably to use as a makeshift lock pick” to “He might use it to kill one of the guards.”

Although his face is obscured by prison glass, the Joker is clearly missing most of his hair and appears to be facially disfigured.

Reeves actually offered insight into the Joker’s look during an interview with Variety, explaining he 'has a congenital disease where he can’t stop smiling'.

He further clarified: "It’s not about some version where he falls into a vat of chemicals and his face is distorted, or what [Christopher] Nolan did, where there’s some mystery to how he got these scars carved into his face.”

Reeved added: "What if this guy from birth had this disease and he was cursed? He had this smile that people stared at that was grotesque and terrifying. Even as a child, people looked at him with horror, and his response was to say, ‘Okay, so a joke was played on me,’ and this was his nihilistic take on the world.”
