Golden Globes host Jo Koy appeared to go off-script as he hit back at the audience when one of his jokes didn't quite get the reaction he was looking for.
Koy was chosen to be the host of the famous awards show just last month; a gig which left him 'super excited', but also rushing to come up with a speech to acknowledge some of the year's biggest movies and stars.
After admitting to The Hollywood Reporter that he had 'never watched this many movies and TV shows in [his] life', Koy delivered a monologue which referenced Barbie, Saltburn and Taylor Swift, among other big topics.

Many of Koy's jokes earned laughter from the crowd, but some didn't land with everyone and left the comedian attempting to save face.
One such joke came as Koy took a swing at the acting industry amid a joke about the Barbie movie, saying: "The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet... or what casting directors call 'character actor'."
When I say you could have heard a pin drop in the moment after Koy delivered the punch line - I mean it.

A few people did start to chuckle after a second or two, but whether it was out of genuine amusement or awkwardness, it's hard to say.
Either way, Koy clearly realized that the joke hadn't landed, prompting him to defend himself.
"Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote... yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?," he asked.
Koy then appeared to lash out even more, saying: "Yo, shut up. You're kidding me right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they're the ones you're laughing at."

The seemingly off-script explosion led one viewer to brand Koy's speech as 'probs [sic] one of the worst opening monologues ever', while other viewers criticized the host for 'blaming the writers' for the lack of laughs.
"If I bombed this hard in front of Margot Robbie you’d never see me again," another viewer wrote.
Other viewers went as far as to described Koy as the 'worst host ever', with one writing: "WORST HOST EVER. Please Bring back @rickygervais next time. Thank you!"

Before taking to the stage, Koy told The Hollywood Reporter he'd had to take on a 'crash course in how to emcee a major event', but that it wouldn't stop him from roasting some of the stars in the crowd.
"I want to do it in a celebratory way, and I want to have a good time, but I am still going to make fun of a lot of people," he said.
UNILAD has reached out to a representative for Koy for comment.
