The case of a dad who was killed in a deadly carjacking while collecting his son from daycare has had a shocking twist.

On September 30, Carl Morgan, 36, was fatally shot while collecting his son from daycare on Canal Street, New Orleans.

The cops said the suspected gunman, 21-year-old Raymond Wells, then took off with Carl's car at around 5.15pm local time that day, leaving Carl and his son, Silas, in the parking lot of the daycare.

Teachers ushered the children at the daycare back inside after hearing the gunshot, an eyewitness told WVUE. Carl's son, as well as the other children, was unharmed.

Now, police have issued a strange update in the case, revealing that just 15 minutes after the alleged carjacking, accused gunman Raymond Wells was found suffering from a gunshot wound himself in the stolen car.

The vehicle rolled to a stop on Interstate 10 in Metairie, and Wells was found unresponsive inside.

On October 1, NOPD Deputy Chief Nicholas Gernon said Wells has sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was in 'extremely grave condition' in hospital.

Gernon said Wells would be booked with first-degree murder if he recovered from his wounds.

But on Sunday (October 5), NOPD spokesperson Karen Boudrie told local news outlets NOLA.com and WVUE that Wells passed away that morning.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office will now perform an autopsy on Wells, while cops say they are investigating the incident.

Gernon said Wells was allegedly spotted breaking into cars near Bienville Street before coming into contact with Carl, during which he was seen by other passers-by, whom he may have shot at.

According to the deputy chief, the witnesses are cooperating with police who are trying to determine if anyone else had shot back at Wells.

As for Carl, his heartbroken family and friends described the father-as-one as a passionate chef who 'lived loud, laughed hard and never did anything halfway.'

French Quarter restaurant Brennan's paid tribute to the late sous chef, writing in an Instagram post: "Carl’s senseless and untimely death is heartbreaking.

"Carl was a devoted father, loving partner, cherished son, and friend to all. His remarkable talent, positive energy, and immeasurable impact will be sorely missed at Brennan’s."

A GoFundMe page to support Carl's partner, Lisa, and their son has also raised more than $48,000 at the time of writing.

"He brought heat, hustle, and heart to everything he touched — from the food he created to the people he loved. Carl was known for his fierce passion, his edge, and his loyalty," the fundraiser read in part.

"We lost our friend far too soon. The shock still hasn’t faded. Losing someone with that kind of energy and presence leaves a hole you can feel. He wasn’t just a chef — he was a force. He pushed, inspired, mentored, and made every kitchen feel alive."

It continued: "But more than anything, Carl was a family man. His son, Silas, was his world — his reason, his pride, and his heartbeat. And right there beside him was Lisa, his partner in life — his rock, his love, and his best friend.

"Every long day, every grind, every ounce of passion Carl poured out was for them. Together, they were his home and his purpose."
