Trevor Noah emotionally signs off from The Daily Show

The Daily Show host Trevor Noah said he was leaving to focus on traveling, family and friends

In an emotional farewell, Trevor Noah said his goodbyes to The Daily Show audience after running the show for a whopping seven seasons.

The South African comedian took over from longtime host Jon Stewart in 2015 and has perhaps surpassed expectations.

During his final goodbye, Noah referred to his time on the Comedy Central show as the 'craziest journey that I didn't predict, I didn't expect'.

"I remember when we started the show, we couldn't get enough people to fill the audience," Noah said.

"Thank you to the people who watch, the people who share the clips, everyone who’s had an opinion, everyone who’s been kind enough and gracious enough."

The host also took time out to thank the 'Black women in his life', saying: "I’ve often been credited with, you know, having these grand ideas. People will be like, ‘Oh, Trevor, you are so smart.’ And I’m like, who do you think teaches me? You know?

"Who do you think has shaped me, nourished me and formed me? From my mom, my gran, my aunts, all these Black women in my life, but then in America as well.

"I always tell people, if you truly want to learn about America, talk to Black women.

"Yeah, because unlike everybody else, Black women can’t afford to [expletive] around and find out."

Noah first announced he was leaving the show in September and on the week of his seventh anniversary, he said: "There's so many people who make this thing come together. And I want to say thank you to the audience for an amazing seven years. It's been wild.

"I remember when we first started. So many people didn't believe in us. It was a crazy bet to make. I still think it was a crazy choice. [...] And what a journey that it's been.

"Every single one of you who comes to support us, everyone who watches every day [...] I found myself filled with gratitude for the journey. It's been absolutely amazing and it's been something I never expected."

"With no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps," the Comedy Central network said in a statement.

"As we look ahead, we’re excited for the next chapter in the 25+ year history of The Daily Show as it continues to redefine culture through sharp and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them."
