After going into remission following treatment, Doherty later revealed in 2019 that the cancer had aggressively returned -with some cancer cells now spreading to her brain.
Speaking to Good Morning America at the time, the actor said: "It’s going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I’m stage four. So my cancer came back and that’s why I’m here."
Doherty said she had kept the news out of the public domain for a year, adding: "I don’t think I’ve processed it. It’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways.

"I definitely have days where I say ‘Why me?’ And then I go ‘Well, why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this? None of us do.
"But I would say that my first reaction is always concern about how am I going to tell my mom, my husband."
And now, in a heartbreaking update this week, the 52-year-old shared a clip of her undergoing a CT scan – entitled ‘January 9, 2023.’
She then added another clip, with a lengthy caption in which she revealed she had begun radiation treatment on January 12.

“January 12, 2023. January 5th, my ct scan showed Mets in my brain,” she wrote, with the actor visibly crying as she was fitted a mask to wear during her treatment.
“January 12, the first round of radiation took place. My fear is obvious,” she told fans, explaining that she suffered from extreme claustrophobia but was thankful for the medics who were supporting her treatment.
Continuing, she added: “But that fear…. The turmoil….. the timing of it all…. This is what cancer can look like.”

While a third added: "Thank you for sharing this … it’s so terrifying to go through and it helps others to know what to expect."
