Why Deadpool and Wolverine was nearly never made according to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman

Why Deadpool and Wolverine was nearly never made according to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman

We almost lived in a world, without this film

With the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise only a month away, it seems unthinkable that there was ever a world where we didn’t get another film with the iconic Ryan Reynolds character.

As revealed by Reynolds and Deadpool and Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman however, that was almost the case – as Reynolds was reportedly on the verge of spiking the project.

This has come from a deep dive with Vanity Fair interviewing Reynolds, Jackman, and writer-director Shawn Levy.

The trio discussed how the project came about, with Reynolds and Levy admitting they were just days away from planning to tell Marvel boss Kevin Feige to put the project on hold.

Their issues came from figuring out ways to bring the character, who began in the Fox X-Men universe, over to Marvel’s MCU.

Levy said: “We frankly struggled to find a story that felt original and non-derivative of the other two Deadpool movies.

“It had to be deserving of the first Deadpool entry into the MCU, but also feel grounded because this is an earthbound, gritty, realistic superhero franchise.

“Ryan and I were right at the edge of saying to Kevin [Feige], ‘You know what? Maybe now is not the right moment because we’re not coming up with a story’.”

In comes Hugh Jackman.

The pair revealed that right as they were ready to throw in the towel, Reynolds received a call from Jackman.

The Australian actor had hung up his claws, with the character having been retired following Logan.

However, Jackman said that during a break from his role on Broadway in The Music Man, an epiphany came to him.

He said: “I was sitting on a beach, not a care in the world, and for some reason, the thought came into my head: ‘What do you want to do?

“The first two things had nothing to do with work—then literally, I thought: ‘Deadpool-Wolverine. I want to do that movie'.”

The trio went on state that, whilst they all recognised the importance of treating the ending to Logan with reverence, Jackman being on board unlocked new possibilities for the film.

Now though, Jackman is back and the film is set for one of the biggest R-Rated openings of all time.

A report by Deadline reckons that Deadpool and Wolverine could be set for a $200-239 million at the domestic box office, which would be a mammoth performance.

This would shatter numerous records if that was the case: namely – the biggest R Rated opening weekend ever, Ryan Reynold’s largest opening weekend ever, Hugh Jackman’s largest opening weekend ever, and would make it far and away the biggest film of 2024.

All that – and it would’ve never happened if Jackman didn’t pick up the phone.
